BIOL 380: Natural History Field Studies of Coastal Eco-systems

Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary:                        1 unit transfers                                                                                                                                                   
The Gulf of the Farallones Marine Sanctuary encompasses millions of acres of land north of San Francisco and offshore areas that include the Farallon Islands and the Cordell Banks. Through lecture and field excursions, participants will learn geology, biology, and ecology associated with this pristine system.  A tour along the San Andreas Fault while birding many locations from Bodega Bay to Bolinas Lagoon is part of this class. Elephant seals and whales may top the weekend. Students will be required to provide their own lodging or camping equipment and meals.  Each topic can be taken one time for credit.

Ano Nuevo State Marine Reserve:                                                     1 unit transfers

This course explores the unique Ano Nuevo State Reserve.  Located 20 miles north of Santa Cruz, this reserve is a spectacular assemblage of plants, animals and geologic features that past participants in this course have learned to love and enjoy.  The class will tour the park studying elephant seals, tide pools, geology, plants, birds and a variety of natural history topics.  Watching California gray whales at Pigeon Point may top the weekend!  The coastal wilderness feeling of Ano Nuevo makes this a very special place to visit. Students will be required to provide their own lodging or camping equipment and meals. Each topic can be taken one time for credit.

BIOL 382: Natural History Field Studies of Desert Lake Ecosystems
* Canceled Due to recent BUDGET CUTS. Vote in November!
Mono Lake:                                                             1 unit transfers

Mono Lake, a unique saline environment situated in the southern portion of the Great Basin, is a national treasure.  The Mono Lake story is both complex and fascinating.  Travel with us to view thousands of migratory birds in sight of spectacular geologic formations like tufa towers and glaciated valleys.  We'll hike the outer rim of a volcano while enjoying breath-taking views of the Mono Basin and the east side of the Sierra mountain range. Students will be required to provide their own lodging or camping equipment and meals. Each topic can be taken one time for credit.

BIOL 389: Natural History of Wetland Eco-systems

Heart of the Delta:                                                1 unit transfers

This class will focus on the biology, ecology and natural history of wildlife preserves on the northern and eastern boundaries of the Sacramento- Joaquin Delta. Hiking and car tours of pristine areas such as the Isenberg crane preserve, the Nature Conservancy’s Cosumnes River Preserve and Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge will occur. A very special visit to the Chinese community of Locke, CA is planned. No lodging or camping is required for this particular trip. Each topic can be taken one time for credit.
